Future of Food (2000) – Part 1 – Mali

In 2000, USC Canada produced a 15 minute educational program exploring the issue of food security. Using examples from our programs in Mali and Nepal, you’ll see how, in the communities where we work, our partners are ensuring everyone has access to enough safe and nutritious Food.

USC would like to thank Kensington Communications (www.kensingtontv.com or youtube.com/user/KensingtonTV) for their generous support in producing this video.

    Please understand …
Please understand this reasonably simple problem that is persisting. western farming subsidies = no chance to compete for an african farmer (and also perpetuates both our ability and willingness to supply food aid)= subsistence farming methods prevail (thus proneness to drought etc) = little incentive or monetary ability to invest heavily in the land. To suggest they need to be educated on how to be self sufficient is true ill-educated western arrogance.

call me crazy or as …
call me crazy or as you put it scared of losing a comfort or two for the sake of equal opportunity for the world, but there is no such thing as equal and there never will be. These people need to educated in farming, self sufficiant lifestyles and as many people have already commented on birth control. Maybe its you that are scared of realizing that some people you just cant help.

  4. crewlla Says:

    I agree with …
I agree with teaching them how to grow food on there own and to stand on there own two feet. I strongly feel that they should not have funds sent to them most of the money you send to these countrys go no where. How much of it actually goes to these people. There goverment shoots down planes that come to help these people there own gorverment wants to keep these people suppressed they need education to teach them. if you are just giving them stuff they will never learn to live on there own.

  5. TbgO Says:

    if your from any …
if your from any ex-colonial or ex-slaving state then you should definitely reconsider helping your own before helping others. The tyranny of the past 400 years will just be perpetuated otherwise – or maybe you like the comfort of your western upbringing and your scared of losing a comfort ot two for the sake of equal opportunity for the world

  6. TbgO Says:

    i just cannot abide …
i just cannot abide this comment. It is a human right to have the option to have children. The tyranny of the western diet (eating far too much meat esp. beef) and the western imports of water heavy products from water scarce regions and to have the audacity to continue with our farming subsidies that perpetuate the ecological degredation of African farmland. We havent got a heart to breath with let alone a leg to stand on.

  7. dza9 Says:

    even animals in …
even animals in captivity if there fed just enough food for a few young will have a few young, if not enough they wont make more babies, only people do this, out of some ”wish” or just plain ignorance. in a meritocracy that real life is i ask u ‘what merit is in doing this” and i mean in the way of having kids u cant feed, thats plain cruel and nothing else.

  8. TerdFergus Says:

    If you can’t find …
If you can’t find enough food for yourself. Don’t have kids……..Period. Quit feeling bad for these people. It happens here too, kids have kids, can’t feed them. The government just pays for them to continue reproducing their ignorance…

  9. roibasses Says:

    Having kids can be …
Having kids can be as selfish as it is not selfish. After all we are having “my” child. We are making the decision to have a child (self interest) because it pleases “me”. Obviously the child was not consulted – they are not here yet to consult. However, once the child is born, there are opportunities to be selfless.

  10. rndmskid Says:

    Everyone keeps …
Everyone keeps talking about having kids as a “selfish” thing. On the contrary, having children is (for most people) a very self-less thing. As a parent the burden is all on you to raise and care for your children. taking on a responsibility like that may be foolhardy, but it is not selfish. Besides, No one wants to see their children starve.

  11. Skandalf Says:

    Dude, you missed my …
Dude, you missed my point completely. Plus your way of thinking makes me belive you have never seen the poor face of the planet, and now you feel all heroic and stuff. Trust me, i live in a 3rd world country, i’ve seen places just as poor. With my own eyes. And everywhere i went, people only had 2-3 children…you don’t need a whole army of kids for daily work, unless you own alot of land(which means you have alot of food).

  12. dawnsinger1 Says:

    poor little spoilt …
poor little spoilt rich american kid. on the contrary, I know very well what rights are. I suppose you think it’s perfectly reasonable that people have to pay taxes so that YOU can drive on nicely paved roads. But you’re not ever going to give one cent of your precious blood money to keep someone from starving to death. Nah… gotta keep the power with all the people that “count” hey.

  13. delyshBB Says:

    you have no idea …
you have no idea what rights are. if you have to pay for someone’s things, it’s a privilege, not a right.

  14. dawnsinger1 Says:

    gee… why the …
gee… why the would I pay for your education, the roads you use to drive on, and about a million other things, with MY taxes. Oh right… because I understand the importance of universal rights for all people. ALL. well, maybe except you. you’re just a useless, resource using shit, not good for anything.

  15. sim0b Says:

    Agreed with you …
    Agreed with you mate.

  16. rndmskid Says:

    Don’t fool yourself …
Don’t fool yourself. You are an idiot. Animals dont stop mating when their populations get large. Other factors limit their population, like disease and predators. Developing countries have more children to help with the daily work. They can’t just run down to the kwik-e-mart and gab a big gulp the way douchebags like you do. so dont judge. Do you think people who are struggling to afford food and water give a about condoms? … come on pal.

  17. Skandalf Says:

    Actually you are …
Actually you are the idiot. Look around you, in nature, whenever a species runs out of food, what happens? do they still multiply, because of the “primal urge”? No, they thin out. It’s called equilibrium. Funny thing is that humans are quite the opposite. Usually the poorest families have the most children. They made them, it’s THEIR responsability, not anybody else’s. And fyi, contraception has been around since sex has, so don’t tell me they can’t just have sex without making a child.

  18. MattLepp Says:

    you sir are an …
you sir are an idiot…good in theory but think it thru and ur asking these human to forgo one of the most primal urges…to procreate, granted many places have way to control undesirable population growth but the developing countries do not…

  19. delyshBB Says:

    why the would …
why the would i pay for poor people’s food? i mean, i donated to stuff, but i don’t want someone else to tell me what to do with my $.

  20. pinkbum1 Says:

    they have too many …
they have too many children in these countries. I have pity for them, but for fricks sake – stop having so many children until you can feed the first one you have. It is SELFISH to have children which you cannot feed. Fix the food problem FIRST then have children LATER! One child or none at all is enough – and is not selfish

  21. redhead2126 Says:

    ok and then once …
ok and then once there ookay and prospering you can help others around the world

  22. crewlla Says:

    If the world paid …
If the world paid back canada for all the money they have borowed from our country in the last 100 years we would have no hungry or homeless here. then maybe more people would be happy to help. I would rather the help go back to my own country. No one deserves to go hungry with all the land that is in the world but, teach them how to grow dont send money, or food. teach them how to grow. let them feed them selves.

  23. crewlla Says:

    you dont even know …
you dont even know me. so you woudnt know wether I was doing anything about world hunger or not…….You are intitled to your opinon just like I am to mine. I will continue to help my own first before I help anyone else.

  24. redhead2126 Says:

    what r u joking??? …
what r u joking??? We need to help the world prosper not just ourselves. it would be nice if everyone had food but its hard and it’s not like ur doing anything about it

  25. catfish36 Says:

    That’s the problem. …
That’s the problem. Because people are selfish, self-indulgent and thoughtless, they don’t realize how their behavior impacts others.

You can’t legislate people’s concerns. Whatever happens in one part of the world will eventually affect us.
