Watch Video on Adding Fractions – Math Help

Access full lesson containing this video at: http://www.yourteacher.com/algebra1/addingfractions.php Students learn to add or subtract fractions using the least common denominator, which is the least common multiple for the denominators of the fractions. Once the fractions are given a common denominator by multiplying the numerator and denominator of each fraction by the appropriate number, then the fractions can be added or subtracted by adding or subtracting the numerators, and leaving the denominator the same.

    Translating what …
    Translating what FMH says:

Say you have 8 over 24. You need to find a number that can divide EVENLY (nothing left over). 8 can be divided into 24 and 8 evenly, because 8 goes into 8 1 time, and 8 goes into 24 3 times. So the 1 takes the place of the 8, and the 3 takes place of the 24.

Or you can do the same thing by dividing it by 2, but it takes longer. That’s why it’s recommended to learn your times tables first, so it doesn’t take as long.

    say you have 8/24. …
say you have 8/24. find a number that can be divided evenly into each. in this case, 8 works. 8/8=1. and 24/8=3. so it is 1/3. or you can do 2 which would also work, just takes longer. 8/2=4. 24/2=12. 4/2=2. 12/2=6. 2/2=1. and 6/2=3 also getting 1/3. hopefully that made sense.
